![]() And Bill Robinson was the best of all.”Īfter ending her screen career at 21, Shirley married businessman Charles Black in 1950. “He didn’t talk down to me, like to a little girl…I liked people like that. “Bill Robinson treated me as an equal, which was very important to me,” Shirley told NPR. They dazzled viewers in four releases: The Little Colonel, The Littlest Rebel, Captain January, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Shirley’s best dance numbers featured tap legend Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. As a teen, she co-starred in Since You Went Away (1944) and The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947), as Myrna Loy’s kid sister who’s smitten with Cary Grant. From there, Shirley won parts in Little Miss Marker, Now and Forever (easily upstaging Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard), and Bright Eyes, performing her signature song, “On the Good Ship Lollipop.” Signing with 20 th Century-Fox, she saved the studio from bankruptcy with leading roles in Poor Little Rich Girl, Curly Top, Stowaway, Wee Willie Winkie, Heidi, and The Little Princess. Ironically, Shirley didn’t make the cut for the more famous Our Gang comedies for reasons its producers surely came to regret!Īn adorable bit in Baby Take a Bow (1934) delivered Shirley’s big break. Her mother Gertrude enrolled her three-year-old daughter in a dance school for pint-sized movie hopefuls, which led to gigs in eight Baby Burlesks shorts. Shirley Jane Temple was born in Santa Monica, California on April 23, 1928. Still, she bore no grudges and kept her notoriety in perspective, saying, “I always think of her as ‘the little girl.’ She’s not me.” Shirley modestly attributed her popularity to timing: “People in the Depression wanted something to cheer them up, and they fell in love with a dog – Rin Tin Tin – and a little girl.” Despite her global fame, Shirley remained firmly grounded by her parents, who managed her career (brilliantly), but mismanaged her finances (terribly), draining her $3 million trust fund down to $45,000. ![]() An authority no less than FDR noted, “When the spirit of the people is lower than at any other time, it is a splendid thing that for just 15 cents an American can go to a movie and look at the smiling face of a baby and forget his troubles.” More phenomenon than mere performer, Shirley was the #1 box-office draw for four straight years (1935-38), leaving legends like Gable and Garbo in the dust. Yet “star” doesn’t really capture Shirley’s impact. If Seabiscuit could speak, he might have eclipsed Shirley’s popularity – but no other child star ever has. Both were merchandising machines, whose images graced everything from toys to clothing. Both lifted the sagging hopes of a weary nation. S.In the 1930s, two of the most powerful antidotes to the Great Depression were a racehorse named Seabiscuit and a little girl named Shirley Temple. I smiled, I laughed as I prepared this post, while looking over a lifetime of photos and posters of Miss Temple, I include them for you and hope they bring to you as much joy as they have for me today. Let us not mourn but let us celebrate her life’s work, her talent which she shared with us so freely and pass on our love of her work to those little ones around us, thereby trusting into their hands a gift that keeps on giving. We will enjoy and remember the good times, that were forever caught on celluloid, of this “not seen before, nor anyone after, once in a century” child star, Shirley Temple. This brief description has been repeated for decades by children and parents as they have delighted in the Curly-Top, whether at the movies when they first premiered, or on TV on Saturday mornings and more recently on Beta, VHS, DVD and now streaming. When I was a boy in the 1960’s, each week on television I watched her films, growing more familiar with her stories, entertained and traveling to different lands, different peoples with my companion Shirley Temple. And not leaving out her more adult work, she was able to grab spots in three true classic Hollywood films: Since You Went Away, 1944, The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, 1947, and Fort Apache, 1948. During her career she captured lead roles in the beloved children’s classic stories adapted for moving-pictures: Heidi, 1937 and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, 1938. Miss Temple started off with numerous short films , getting her first feature film roles in 1932 with Red Haired Alibi and Kid’s Last Stand she did have some uncredited feature-work (To the Last Man, 1933, Carolina and As the Earth Turns, 1934) and having her scenes deleted in the 1934 production of Mandalay.Īppearing with Hollywood elite, movie after movie, Shirley Temple acted along side with the who’s who of the Silver Screen. Shirley Jane Temple was born on April 23rd, 1928 in Santa Monica, California. Our Good Ship Lollipop girl has passed leaving a legacy of sweetness, wholesomeness and joy for generations to come.

But it was all telegraphed far too obviously during “I Know Who You Are” for the actual reveal to carry much weight, especially since we've seen the show do this at least twice before. The Flash had laid out the groundwork for Savitar’s reveal throughout the season (and even during the crossover event, when a future Barry sends a message warning the team not to trust him). What is Barry supposed to learn from this encounter? Now, we only have three or so episode for The Flash to work out this massive personal conundrum. Savitar has been goading Barry throughout this season, but without knowing who he was, his threats felt just like hollow villain speak. But it makes for great, deep character drama. That’s dark, and it’s something Oliver is choosing whether or not to believe, and (regardless) how to move on from it. But on Arrow, Prometheus, post-reveal, has worked to try and show Oliver who he “really” is - not a vigilante, but just a killer who thrives on death. Would any of them really have made sense? Not particularly, but how much sense does it make that Savitar is Future Barry right now anyway? It’ll all be explained away with Speed Force mumbo jump, and that’s fine. Having Savitar revealed as Ronnie Raymond, Eddie Thawne, or Wally West would have each brought unique stakes to the plot, something that could have played out over time if there had been an earlier sense of who Savitar was. ![]() Grant Gustin is an exceptionally likable and charismatic guy on screen. Thus, Barry being his greatest enemy this season has really not been particularly fun to watch, now or with the reveal of Savitar. Overly upset and introspective Barry is not fun to watch. which Barry? Is this a Flashpoint remnant Barry, or emo 2024 Barry, or another Barry we don’t yet know? And regardless, why did he give Kid Flash his powers via that cocoon, and why would he kill Iris? We know he’s been driven insane by the Speed Force, but it seems like an excessively contrived opportunity to continue to punish Present Day Barry. There’s still a lingering question, though, about who Savitar is, i.e. Evil Barry would have been a fun convention for an episode or two of alternate reality storylines, but the fact that we have spent so much time and energy on this Savitar storyline for it to just be another Evil Flash reveal was incredibly underwhelming. It’s somehow even more repetitive than if Harrison Wells had stepped out of that suit. In Season 3, Barry is fighting Savitar - literally just Evil Flash a.k.a. In Season 2, Barry fought Zoom - an evil version of The Flash. In Season 1, Barry fought Reverse Flash - an evil version of the The Flash. But here’s why Savitar’s reveal didn’t work at all. The masked villain thing can work, and we’ve seen it work on Arrow and The Flash over and over again. ![]() 6ix9ine shot and directed the entire video at his house, alongside longtime collaborator CanonF8. Some smaller raptors, such as kestrels and screech-owls, will nest in boxes that have suitable dimensions and large enough entrance holes. ![]() Branches should be wide and stable to support raptors' larger nests, and a variety of larger nesting material such as branches and twigs should be available for resident raptors. Nesting Sites: Raptors will use the same large, mature trees for nesting that they favor for perches and shelter.Raptors may also perch on fences, deck railings, or other suitable sites in the yard, or even on the roof of a house, shed, or garage. Snags are great options, as are any large, deciduous or coniferous trees that provide sufficient perching space. Shelter: Raptors favor large, stable perches from which to spot prey as well as sheltered areas where they can roost after a large meal when they need time to properly digest.Bird baths can also be another source of food, as an active bath with many visitors can attract a raptor's attention as another hunting area. Ground bird baths are also suitable, and bird bath fountains that include a deep basin will help attract the hawks with splashing sounds and sparkling drops. Bird baths need to be larger and deeper to accommodate raptors, and sturdy, concrete bird baths or similar designs are best. They will, however, visit bird baths to cool off and bathe, particularly during hot summer months. Water: Most raptors do not regularly drink since they get sufficient liquid from the blood of their prey.If natural prey is available, the birds will find it. Do not bait raptors with pet mice, raw meat, or other treats, however well-intentioned. It is not acceptable, however, to deliberately feed hawks. Insects and rodents are also common prey, and birders should take steps to be sure those potential food sources are available as well. The best way to supply that prey is to attract birds with a good feeding station and other natural foods, and where the birds congregate, a raptor will eventually drop in for a snack. The most common backyard hawks tend to be vigorous hunters and prey on smaller birds, from finches and sparrows to doves and thrushes. Food: All raptors are carnivorous, but they do not all eat the same prey. ![]() The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board. Similar agricultural expansion occurred in some parts of North America, but also in central Asia where farmers spread into the northern region of Russia, into Manchuria, the Amur Valley, and northern Japan. At the time, England was warm enough to support vineyards, centralised governments in Europe were becoming stronger, people no longer needed fortifications to protect their once limited arable lands, and many people left seeking new lands. Unequal consequences for people and environmentsįor about 300 years, these new climate conditions changed ecosystems and radically altered human societies.Īs northern Europe became warmer, agriculture spread and generated food surpluses. These conditions also affected the winter weather in Greenland, north Africa and northern Asia. The increase in solar radiation also modified the atmospheric pressure system over the north Atlantic Ocean ( North Atlantic Oscillation), which brought warmer winters and wetter conditions over northern Europe and most of north-eastern part of the North American continent. Stronger trade winds pushing more warm water towards Asia created wetter conditions in Australasia, droughts in the southern US and South and Central America, and heavy rains and flooding in the Pacific Northwest and Canada. It usually brings clouds and rain in the western tropical Pacific while making regions in the eastern tropical Pacific relatively drier and cooler.ĭuring the Medieval warm period, an increase in solar radiation and decrease in volcanic eruptions created a La Niña-like event that changed the usual patterns. This recurring climate pattern of winds and sea-surface temperatures over the tropical eastern Pacific affects the climate and weather of much of the tropics and subtropics. The most likely cause of the regional changes in temperature was related to a modification of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation. Its presence or absence reflects a redistribution of heat around the planet, and this suggests drivers other than a global increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. The Medieval warm period was by and large a regional event. It all began on Thursday, which was a bit of a nostalgic evening for not only the fans, but for the musicians from several different bands that have friendships going way back. They left it all out on the table, and they succeeded in not only satiating the fans that stick with them through thick and thin, but also reeling back in those disenchanted fans that have been left unfulfilled in recent history and claimed to be giving them a “last chance” at Camp. Marc Brownstein, Aron Magner, Allen Aucoin, and Jon Gutwillig (kudos to some serious shredding on the axe, by the way, Barber) simply brought it. What we received by our beloved Disco Biscuits was a weekend of energized, inspired, and motivated musicianship. What can be agreed upon by all of us in attendance this weekend, or at least from most of us (if you were listening to and watching the reactions of those around you) is that the latter was simply not the case. This past weekend at Camp Bisco, you had that loyal following ready, willing, and able, to either get down as hard as possible to that feeling we call “ Bisco”, or to jump down the throats of the band for not practicing enough, not touring, not playing any “warm-up” shows, and for simply not giving enough of a shit. ![]() But….that’s the way love goes, right? It’s like, “What have you done for me lately? I don’t see no ring on this finger!” You don’t bring your A-game on a nightly basis, you flub that one part in “Hot Air Balloon” and you have just opened up Pandora’s Box you better have some thick skin, because this congregation believes in the Good Note, only when it is played the right way if not, may the Music Gods be with you (and also with you). Go on and it is like an open market for dissent, disagreement, and a schism between warring factions of fans all of whom claim to LOVE the band. Like Phish, The Grateful Dead, moe., and Umphrey’s McGee, Biscuits fans are loyal and dedicated in their love for the band, almost to a fault, yet can also be their harshest critics at the same time. Over the years, The Disco Biscuits have become one of the most controversial acts in the scene when it comes to these assessments from their loyal devotees. Bands that rely heavily on jamming, improvisation, segues, and taking their songs through different peaks and valleys each night, as opposed to bands that run through songs in a fairly similar fashion from night to night, open themselves up to the critique of fans that are not only rabid, but relentless in their opinions and reviews of every show that “their” band plays. It can be widely agreed upon that the fans of the jamband scene are highly fickle individuals when it comes to their bands, comparing show to show, setlist to setlist, song to song, and even a particular jam in one song to how it was jammed on another night. – Chris Meyer (cover photo by Matt Enbar/MenbarPhotos ) ![]() Home Again: The Disco Biscuits Bring Back That Feeling Called Bisco Please alert your server and they will guide you to a special choice while ensuring our chefs take extra care with your dishes.
